The Mystery of the Cross: Why Was Christ Truly Crucified?
The cross was not the tragic end of a misunderstood teacher nor merely the payment for individual sins. It was the divinely appointed end of an entire order of humanity. In Christ’s crucifixion, God brought Adam’s story to its final conclusion. The law could expose sin but could not remove the sinner. The cross accomplished what the law never could. It did not reform the old humanity. It put it to death. When Christ was lifted up, He carried with Him not only guilt, but the very source of death itself, so that resurrection life could emerge from the grave as an entirely new creation.
